Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) is seeking highly motivated interns in radiation protection programs who have completed at least one year of relevant community college programs by the beginning of the internships. Interns will engage hands-on with radiological protection department (RPD) personnel in radiologically controlled areas, gaining hands on experience.
Requirements
- Completed at least one year of relevant community college programs
- Monitoring levels of radiation and/or contamination and ensure all aspects of the radiological component are in compliance with federal, state, and site regulations
- Collecting, analyzing, and documenting monitoring data using various radiation and contamination instruments and sampling media
- Learning how to recognize unusual or irregularities in radiological levels or other unforeseen hazards and make notifications to the appropriate management
- Performing routine observations and monitoring of radiologically controlled areas to verify there is no migration of contamination and that radiological controls, including postings, are adequate
- Performing radiological protection functions using instrumentation to detect and measure radiological conditions; frequently under poor field conditions, such as inadequate lighting and ventilation, and extreme temperatures
- Conducting contamination and radiation surveys associated with radioactive material movements, transfers, or shipments
- Assisting in job preplanning and make recommendations on the appropriate protective clothing, dosimetry, and respiratory protection based on previous survey data
