Job Description
The Houston Chronicle is seeking a Data Reporter to join their Hearst Texas Data Team. This role involves producing data-focused journalism, tackling datasets with skepticism, and analyzing data to drive impactful and audience-engaging stories. The successful candidate will work collaboratively and contribute to the growth of data literacy within the newsroom.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience with large, complex datasets in a newsroom setting
- Understanding of political and government data (campaign finance, lobbying, election records)
- Strong news judgment and ability to work quickly without sacrificing accuracy
- Comfort using Python, R or similar tools to clean, analyze and present data
- Creativity in finding stories hidden in spreadsheets and databases
- Working well with colleagues across teams
- Eagerness to experiment with new storytelling forms
